According to USSPACECOM, India has 111 payloads and 105 space debris objects circling the Earth, Union Minister Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

In a written response, Singh stated that all orbital junk would have an influence on the sustainability of outer space and future missions, and that ISRO has conducted several studies on the effects of expanding space debris on the space environment.

Singh stated that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) conducted 21 collision avoidance manoeuvres of Indian Operational Space assets in 2022 to avoid collision hazards from other space objects.

According to the minister, ISRO and academics have been conducting research and studies on potential and future hazards from space debris since the early 1990s.

He stated that the ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Operations Management (IS4OM) was established in 2022 to focus on more focused efforts to continuously monitor objects posing a collision threat, improve prediction of the evolution of the space debris environment, and coordinate activities to mitigate the risk posed by space debris.

To deal with the hazard of very small debris items that are too small to track, spacecraft must be protected against hit, he says.

ISRO is doing spacecraft shielding research and development to increase the safety of prospective missions, according to Singh.
