The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for a significant milestone with the impending completion of the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport.In a recent announcement, ISRO Chairman S. Somanath disclosed that the spaceport, scheduled for completion within two years, will redefine India's capabilities in small satellite launches.
The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 28, 2024, marked a significant milestone in India's space program. Following the event, Chairman Somanath engaged in an informal dialogue with reporters, shedding light on the project's progress and its transformative impact on space exploration.
The primary objective of the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport is to serve as a dedicated facility for launching Small Satellite Launch Vehicles (SSLVs). Beyond its operational functionality, the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport offers strategic advantages that set it apart from existing launch facilities. Unlike launches from ISRO's Sriharikota facility, which necessitate a circuitous route to circumvent Sri Lanka's airspace, the Kulasekarapattinam spaceport boasts a direct southern trajectory.
