Impulse Space, a pioneering startup in space transportation and exploration, recently announced a significant addition to its board of directors. Retired Space Force General John “Jay” Raymond has joined the board, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise in the space domain.

Based in Redondo Beach, California, Impulse Space was founded in 2021 by Tom Mueller, a key figure in the early days of SpaceX. Mueller played a crucial role in designing the Merlin rocket engine, which powers SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles. Impulse Space focuses on developing orbital maneuvering vehicles for last-mile payload delivery in low Earth orbit and beyond. The company's innovative approach has garnered attention, particularly in the government sector.

General Raymond served as the first chief of space operations for the Space Force from 2019 to 2022. His appointment to the board comes at a pivotal time for Impulse Space, as the company experiences strong momentum in the government sector.

Impulse Space recently secured two Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) contracts under the SpaceWERX Tactically Responsive Space challenge. Out of 302 proposals submitted by 232 companies, Impulse Space was one of the 19 awardees.

As a board member, General Raymond will provide support and guidance to the Impulse team in its collaborations with government partners and customers. Raymond praised Impulse Space as "an innovative company led by our nation's leading propulsion experts, focused on responsive space mobility."

In November, Impulse Space launched Mira, a small transfer vehicle that successfully deployed a cubesat as part of the LEO Express-1 mission. The company also unveiled Helios, a larger vehicle designed to transport satellites from low Earth orbit to geostationary orbit in less than a day.

Impulse Space's SBIR contracts include demonstrating rapid refueling operations with the Mira vehicle and developing the Helios engine for accessing high-energy orbits beyond LEO. Tom Mueller expressed excitement about the company's potential to enhance tactical responsiveness in space, particularly in orbits like MEO and GEO.

Since retiring from active duty in October 2022, General Raymond has joined private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management as senior managing director. In this role, he oversees supply chain and strategic opportunities and provides strategic guidance on space investments. Cerberus is reportedly among the potential buyers interested in acquiring United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed.
